Law Student Charged After Bomb Destined for Northern Ireland Attack Intercepted

Irish authorities have arrested and charged a 25-year-old law student with possession of explosives after intercepting a highly sophisticated bomb near the border with Northern Ireland. Isobella Perrie Sullivan, from Clane, County Kildare, appeared before Trim District Court on Friday evening and was remanded in custody.

The Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police force, stated that a second suspect, a man in his 40s, remains in custody in connection with the same investigation into offenses against state security. The arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation targeting dissident republican groups.

According to investigators, the vehicle carrying the explosive device was stopped on the N2 national road in County Monaghan on Wednesday afternoon. Sources within the Garda described the bomb as "very sophisticated," fully assembled, and ready for use. It reportedly contained a power unit, detonator, and military-grade explosives, believed to be Semtex, which investigators suspect was destined for a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack in Northern Ireland.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly called the seizure "an extremely significant capture," emphasizing that the device was fully functional and could have caused considerable damage. He warned that a small faction of dissident republicans continues to pose a threat, as they have not accepted the Good Friday Agreement or relinquished their weapons and explosives. The operation, Kelly noted, was a planned action based on intelligence regarding the individuals involved, not a routine check.
