Lawal signs education reform executive orders, distributes national curricula to Zamfara schools

Governor Dauda Lawal has initiated a significant overhaul of the education sector in Zamfara State by signing executive orders aimed at establishing an integrated governance framework. These reforms target critical areas including education financing, school protection, classification, quality assurance, health, and security.

It is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth, and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.

The governor also launched the distribution of national curricula to public schools, signaling a move towards standardized and improved educational content. The comprehensive reforms address various aspects of school operations, from governance and student welfare to transportation safety and the implementation of safe school policies. They also include provisions for unified examinations, school health services, merit-based leadership appointments, inclusive education, and the promotion of STEM, TVET, and digital education.

Governor Lawal articulated a strong vision for education, stating it is "the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth, and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world." He stressed that these executive orders are not isolated measures but form a cohesive framework designed to enhance school administration, boost accountability, safeguard educational assets, improve financing, ensure safety, elevate standards, and ultimately prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

These Executive Orders are not isolated directives. He further noted that past education reforms often concentrated heavily on physical infrastructure. While acknowledging the importance of classrooms and facilities, Lawal pointed out that buildings alone do not guarantee quality education. The Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that successful education systems rely on collaboration among government, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners, and the private sector. He assured that the reforms would translate into tangible improvements, including safer schools, stronger governance, healthier students, better teaching, improved outcomes, and increased public confidence.
