Lawmaker's '1 million attendees' claim at Taipei rally sparks ridicule

A political rally held by the Kuomintang (KMT) at Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei drew sharp criticism after legislator Fu Kun-chi claimed the event attracted over one million attendees. Political commentator Chou Hsuan shared a video of Fu Kun-chi stating on stage, "Dear fellow countrymen, we have over one million people here today." Shortly after, the rally's host, Taipei City Councilor Liu Tsai-wei, announced that the crowd size had reached 80,000.

The vast difference between one million and 80,000 sparked a barrage of online commentary. Netizens sarcastically remarked, "Is it not yet the Ghost Festival?" and "There must be one million underworld brothers present." Others accused the organizers of treating attendees like "idiots" and suggested that "even scam groups would be ashamed of such tactics."

Further mocking Fu's claim, one user commented, "One million people would fill the space from Ketagalan Boulevard all the way to the Taipei City Hall, King of Hualien." Another user quipped, "He has a disease where he can't speak without lying." The criticism extended to questioning whether the attendees included those affected by the KMT's "death by joint signature" petitions, a reference to a controversial political maneuver.
