Lawyer Accused of Aiding Chinese Official's Failed Taiwan Entry Faces Charges

A distinguished lawyer and an immigration consultant are accused of masterminding a scheme to help Chinese nationals enter Taiwan under the guise of business visits. Taipei District Prosecutors Office has indicted lawyer Chen Zhen-wei and Shi Feng-shen, the de facto head of Jiawei Immigration Consulting Co., for violating the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.

The operation allegedly involved fabricating business activity plans and itineraries to secure Belizean passports and nationality for Chinese citizens, including Li Feng-xiang, Zhu Nai-xian, and Sun Tao. The goal was to profit from these services, with Chen reportedly set to receive NT$150,000 per case, while each successful entry could yield approximately NT$2.4 million.

The prosecution has charged Chen Zhen-wei and Shi Feng-shen, among others, with violating the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area and other offenses, and has indicted them according to law.

However, the plan unraveled when Li Feng-xiang, who failed to disclose his identity as a Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress representative, was rejected. While two others successfully entered Taiwan, the investigation exposed a broader network involving multiple individuals and companies. Prosecutors are pushing for heavy sentences, particularly for Chen, arguing that his actions have severely tarnished the reputation of the legal profession.

In a separate instance, Chen allegedly assisted another Chinese national, Lu Tao, in entering Taiwan for a fee of NT$25,000. This involved using a qualified company after the initial applicant's company failed to meet the criteria. The prosecution has charged seven individuals in total, with illicit gains from Chen's activities to be confiscated.

Furthermore, it is recognized that Chen has damaged the reputation of the legal profession, and it is requested that the judge impose a heavy sentence.
