LDU Quito's 'largest club' message irritates Universidad de Chile fans after Alvarez presentation

Ecuadorian club Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU) de Quito has seemingly taken a swipe at Universidad de Chile with a social media post following the presentation of Gustavo Alvarez as their new head coach. The club declared itself "the largest university club on the continent," a statement that quickly irked fans of the Chilean team.

Alvarez was officially unveiled by the Quito-based club on Saturday. His previous coaching role was with Universidad de Chile, where he spent two seasons. During his tenure, he led the team to victory in the Copa Chile and the Supercopa, defeating rivals Colo Colo in the latter.

However, his time with the Chilean club was relatively short, having managed San Lorenzo for only 13 matches before joining LDU de Quito. The "indirecta" or indirect message from LDU de Quito, highlighting its own perceived continental status, has been interpreted by many as a provocative statement aimed at Alvarez's former club, sparking a reaction among Universidad de Chile supporters.
