Lebanese army condemns Israeli attacks, citing agreement violations

The Lebanese army issued a strong condemnation of persistent Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon, asserting that these operations impede its complete deployment as stipulated by a recently established framework agreement.

In a statement, the army detailed that "Israeli occupation forces continue their attacks and violations of valid agreements and international law through systematic destruction and demolition of homes, bombings, and attacks using automatic weapons in several southern areas." The military emphasized that these ongoing assaults prevent its full engagement in line with the agreements and hinder the return of residents to their villages and towns.

The U.S.-brokered framework agreement is designed to foster "lasting peace and security" between Lebanon and Israel. Key provisions include the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, their replacement by the Lebanese armed forces, and the disarmament of the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah.

This agreement was reached more than three months after Hezbollah initiated conflict by firing rockets at Israel, in response to the killing of top Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The escalation led to extensive Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion, which Lebanese authorities reported resulted in over 4,300 deaths.

Despite a decrease in violence following the signing of the framework agreement and a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran, Lebanon continues to report sporadic Israeli attacks and shelling in the south. Lebanese President Michel Aoun expressed his belief during a visit to the U.S. that the departure of the Israeli army could remove the "main reason for which Hezbollah has long justified its actions," making the disarmament of the group possible.
