Lecturer Amin Shabana Reappointed as Central KPI Commissioner for 2026-2029 Term

Amin Shabana, a lecturer at Muhammadiyah Jakarta University's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, has been reappointed as a Central Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) commissioner for the 2026-2029 term. The Indonesian House of Representatives confirmed Shabana's appointment on July 17, 2026, after he successfully navigated a national selection process overseen by the Ministry of Communication and Digital, culminating in a fit and proper test at the DPR RI.

This marks Shabana's second term as a KPI commissioner. He views this renewed trust as a significant responsibility requiring integrity, in line with the Broadcasting Law No. 32 of 2002. Shabana also emphasized the moral obligation to uphold the reputation of his university. "For FISIP and UMJ, this is also a big responsibility because I must be able to represent and maintain the good name of the institution where I come from," he stated.

The selection process for KPI commissioners began with a national announcement and registration in early 2026. After administrative stages, interviews, background checks, paper writing, and assessments, 27 candidates underwent a fit and proper test at the DPR RI from July 13-15, 2026. From this group, nine commissioners were appointed for the 2026-2029 term, awaiting a Presidential Decree for their official inauguration.

In his second term, Shabana intends to continue previously initiated programs and introduce new innovations. A key priority is to expedite the revision of the Broadcasting Law to better regulate the evolving digital landscape, including social media and artificial intelligence. "The regulations we are currently using are 24 years old, so many are no longer relevant. Therefore, revising the Broadcasting Law is an urgent need to regulate the development of the digital revolution, social media, and artificial intelligence," he explained.

Beyond regulatory strengthening, Shabana plans to develop an integrated oversight dashboard connecting the KPI Pusat and KPI Daerah to enhance transparency and streamline public complaints. He will also continue fostering the ASEAN Broadcasting Regulators Forum for collaborative efforts in addressing digital broadcasting challenges, including AI-generated content and deepfakes. Shabana is committed to promoting a more inclusive broadcasting industry, ensuring equal access to information, education, entertainment, and career opportunities for all communities, including those in remote areas.
