Libya: Calm Returns to Sorman and Zawiya After Violent Clashes

Libya's interim Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, faced a significant security challenge Tuesday as violent armed clashes broke out between government-aligned militias in the western cities of Sorman and Zawiya.

The fighting, which involved members of the Anti-Security Threats Apparatus and the 103rd Infantry Battalion, known as the “Al-Silaa Battalion,” along with a militia led by Mohannad Suwaisi, lasted for approximately four hours. Eyewitnesses reported the use of medium and heavy weapons, and social media indicated the deployment of a drone. Reports suggest at least five members of the Al-Silaa Battalion were killed by a drone strike, possibly operated by Suwaisi’s militia. Local and security sources noted that the use of drones by smaller militias in internal conflicts marks a concerning escalation in warfare tactics.

Forces loyal to Suwaisi and Mohammed Bahroun, leader of the Anti-Security Threats Apparatus, reportedly seized control of southern Sorman and the Stability Support Apparatus headquarters. The clashes extended to the vicinity of Sorman Central Prison, resulting in a large number of inmates escaping. The Judicial Police Authority in Zawiya urged the escapees to surrender immediately.

Calm was gradually restored in Sorman after forces from the 52nd Brigade, commanded by Mahmoud Bin Rajab, were deployed to contain the tensions and secure the prison. The Sorman Municipality announced that life was returning to normal, condemning the violence and holding responsible parties accountable. The municipality had previously suspended operations and declared an exceptional holiday due to the unrest.
