Lifelong Athlete and Educator Eeva-Liisa Salmi Dies at 96

Eeva-Liisa Salmi, a former primary school teacher, died in Forssa on April 28, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in Riihimäki on December 24, 1929, Salmi was known for her lifelong commitment to physical activity and her dedication to education.

Salmi's passion for sports began in childhood, encouraged by her father. She pursued her teaching career after graduating from the Teacher Training College in Jyväskylä in 1952. Throughout her life, Salmi remained active, finding solace in nature and frequently undertaking hiking and skiing trips in Lapland. Even at 85, she logged 650 kilometers of skiing annually. A hip fracture at 82 did not deter her active lifestyle, as she was playing floorball at the time of her accident.

As an educator, Salmi was both demanding and highly regarded, with former students describing her as "the best teacher ever." She raised her five children with encouragement and love, ensuring they pursued higher education. One of her daughters followed in her footsteps, competing in Finland's top-tier pesäpallo league. Salmi was also actively involved in the School Sports Federation (KLL) and achieved numerous championships in track and field events through the Teachers' Union (OAJ).

After being widowed and becoming a single mother, Salmi remained resilient, motivating her children to excel academically. She spent her final years in her childhood home, keeping up with world events through media. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving a legacy of an active, dedicated, and loving life.
