Liga seeks to keep international options alive against Independiente del Valle

Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito faces a pivotal match on Friday against league leaders Independiente del Valle, aiming to keep their aspirations for 2027 international tournament qualification alive. The 'King of Cups,' as Liga is known, currently sits sixth in the Ecuadorian league with 35 points, trailing the formidable Independiente del Valle's 58. However, Liga has a history of defeating the league leaders this season, having secured a 0-2 victory on April 19.

Victory is essential for Liga to maintain its position within the top six, which guarantees qualification for either the Copa Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana. This match marks the third for Argentine coach Gustavo Álvarez, who has overseen a dominant 6-0 win in the Copa Ecuador and a 2-1 league victory against Delfín, with striker Michael Estrada scoring five goals across those games.

Independiente del Valle, managed by Uruguayan Joaquín Papa, enters the contest on an impressive eight-game winning streak. They currently lead the championship by 19 points over second-place Universidad Católica. Emerson Pata and Matías Perelló are Independiente's top scorers with eight goals each.

The league's tight competition is evident as Universidad Católica, second with 39 points, will play Libertad. Macará, third with 38 points, faces Barcelona, who are under pressure due to administrative issues and inconsistent performance. Aucas, also with 38 points, will host Leones del Norte in another critical match for teams vying for a top-six finish.
