Lima experiences heavy drizzle and temperature drop; Senamhi explains the phenomenon

Various districts in Lima Metropolitan experienced continuous light rain and a marked decrease in temperature starting Sunday afternoon, August 16. The Peruvian National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi) explained that cloud cover over the capital is causing these light precipitation events, primarily affecting the coastal and south-central areas of the city.

Senamhi reported that Lima Sur recorded approximately 4.2 mm of rainfall between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM on August 16. During this period, temperatures dropped from 19°C to 17.7°C, with high humidity levels. This weather pattern is linked to an increase in the intensity of southern winds along the coast, which facilitates the transfer of moisture from the ocean to the central coast.

The combination of fog and high air saturation has led to wet road conditions, prompting authorities to recommend that drivers reduce their speed to prevent accidents. This event is part of a recurring pattern observed throughout the first half of August, with similar episodes of light to moderate drizzle occurring on previous Thursdays and during early mornings.

Senamhi forecasts that these conditions of high humidity and scattered rainfall will persist until August 18 and 19. Humidity levels in the capital have been peaking between 95% and 100% during the early morning and evening hours. In light of the ongoing winter cold and persistent dampness, Senamhi urges citizens to stay warm, protect children and the elderly from respiratory illnesses, and regularly check official weather updates.
