Lima mayor asks Keiko Fujimori to authorize firearms for security personnel

Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo has formally requested President Keiko Fujimori to intervene and expedite the authorization for municipal security personnel to carry firearms. The request is directed at the National Superintendency of Control of Civil Security Services, Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives (Sucamec).

Reggiardo emphasized that this measure is crucial for reinforcing the protection of metropolitan roads, infrastructure projects, and the workers involved. He highlighted the escalating threat of extortion, stating, "We have already had deaths due to extortion." The mayor argued that granting this authorization would allow EMAPE security staff to better safeguard ongoing construction projects and public works across the capital.

We ask the central government, please, to do their job well and not be pressured by those who do not want to give us these authorizations, because we want to protect our streets, we want to protect our works, we want to protect the heritage of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. But give us the tools, let there be no stinginess, let there be political decision.

The mayor insisted that the Municipality of Lima has diligently followed all procedures and met every requirement set by Sucamec for the authorization. "We have requested authorization from Sucamec, complying with absolutely all the processes, procedures, and requirements that have been demanded of us," he stated.

We have already had deaths due to extortion in the works that are being built. I do not want to continue losing human lives and I want to protect those who build them.

Reggiardo appealed to the central government for decisive action, urging them to "do their job well and not be pressured by those who do not want to give us these authorizations." He stressed the importance of providing the necessary tools for security, calling for "political decision" rather than "stinginess." The mayor also called on President Fujimori not to yield to any pressure that might lead to the denial of what he considers a "legal and legitimate" authorization.

Furthermore, Reggiardo addressed the broader issue of rising insecurity in Lima, announcing that he has presented several proposals to both the President and the Prime Minister. These initiatives aim to bolster the authorities' response to the rampant criminality affecting the capital. He expressed a desire to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of those constructing the city's infrastructure.
