Lima registers over 100 bus attacks by July, matching 2025's total

Lima, Peru – The capital city and its adjacent province of Callao have already recorded 107 attacks on buses this year, a grim milestone that matches the total number of incidents from the entirety of last year, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The "same number of attacks on public transport in less time" highlights a worsening security situation, the Ministry of Public Health warned in a social media post. The rise in extortion and contract killings has become a pervasive issue in Lima and Callao over recent years. These criminal activities target a wide range of workers and businesses, from public transport operators to those in commerce and large-scale entertainment.

Nationwide, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported 12,634 extortion and blackmail cases between January and June of this year. This averages to about 1,053 reports per month, 70 per day, and roughly three per hour. Lima East district has the highest number of reported cases with 1,638, followed by La Libertad in the north with 1,435. Lima Centro, Lima Norte, and Lima Sur also show high numbers, with 1,309, 1,163, and 1,155 cases respectively.
