US immigration arrests hit Trump-era monthly high

U.S. immigration authorities apprehended more than 43,000 individuals in June, marking the highest number of detentions during the Trump administration. This figure is on track to be surpassed in July if the current daily arrest rate continues. The statistics from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reveal a significant increase in enforcement actions.

In June, ICE detained 39,563 people, while Customs and Border Protection (CBP) arrested an additional 3,575, totaling 43,138 individuals in custody. This marks the highest number for the fiscal year 2026. These record detentions are attributed to new White House objectives aimed at increasing deportations, fulfilling a key campaign promise by President Trump.

The daily average for July, based on data up to July 11, stands at 1,593 arrests. If this trend persists, the monthly total could reach nearly 50,000. However, this pace still falls short of the White House's target of 2,000 daily arrests, according to three officials familiar with the matter cited by The New York Times. One source indicated uncertainty about sustaining this tempo.

These intensified operations, particularly in major cities, have sparked protests. The situation has been further inflamed by the deaths of at least three immigrants during or while fleeing immigration enforcement. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican, died on July 7 in Houston, Texas. Six days later, 26-year-old Colombian Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero died in Biddeford, Maine. A third immigrant, a Mexican national who had entered the U.S. on a visa, died on July 14 after being struck by a truck on a Florida highway while evading an immigration operation.
