Lima's safest districts identified ahead of potential major earthquake

Lima, a megacity situated on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, is bracing for the potential of a major earthquake after nearly three centuries of relative seismic calm. This prolonged period of inactivity, known as seismic quiet, heightens the probability of a significant seismic event, posing a substantial threat to the capital's millions of inhabitants and its varied infrastructure.

While the entire city is at risk, the preparedness varies significantly across its districts. Some areas have proactively reinforced construction norms and implemented robust prevention plans, making them more resilient to tremors. The stability and safety of a district are influenced by factors such as soil quality, building types, and the effectiveness of local authorities' preparedness measures.

According to the Japanese-Peruvian Center for Seismic Research and Disaster Mitigation (CISMID-UNI), nine districts stand out for their enhanced safety against large-magnitude earthquakes. These include Breña, Centro de Lima, Jesús María, Lince, Magdalena, Miraflores, Pueblo Libre, San Isidro, and San Miguel. Their relative safety is attributed to more solid and rocky soil compositions, which offer greater stability during seismic activity.

Conversely, CISMID has identified eleven districts that are more vulnerable due to geological characteristics like soft or unstable soils. These less secure areas include Ancón, Ate, Chorrillos, Comas, Independencia, Laderas de Carabayllo, San Juan de Lurigancho, Santa Rosa, Ventanilla, Villa El Salvador, and Villa María del Triunfo. The identification of these safer and more vulnerable zones is crucial for targeted urban planning and disaster preparedness efforts in Lima.
