Lion saved as cub from Ukraine war and brought to US battles rare fungal disease

A lion cub rescued from the chaos of the Ukraine war is now fighting for his life against a rare fungal disease in the United States. Taras, now four years old, was discovered as a four-month-old cub inside a duffel bag at a train station in Odesa, Ukraine.

His harrowing journey to safety began when he, along with his two sisters, Lesya and Stefania, and another unrelated cub named Prada from Kyiv, were brought to the U.S. in November 2022. The rescue was facilitated by The Wildcat Sanctuary, a private reserve in Minnesota, in collaboration with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

Now residing at The Wildcat Sanctuary near Sandstone, Minnesota, Taras has been diagnosed with a severe fungal infection. This disease is known for being rare and often fatal, presenting a new and formidable challenge for the lion who has already survived so much. He is currently undergoing treatment, with the sanctuary providing specialized care to combat the aggressive illness.
