Lithuania prepares infrastructure for 2027 EU Council presidency

Lithuania is gearing up to host the European Union Council presidency in the first half of 2027, ensuring readiness in both substantive matters and physical infrastructure. "We see bridges and streets being repaired. I think we will truly be ready and able to receive guests not only with our content, which will be incorporated into adopted legal acts, but also with the environment that will have changed," stated Lithuanian MP J. Olekas to journalists.

Significant renovations are taking place within the Seimas, including the creation of new spaces, refurbishment of corridors, and the historic March 11th Hall, which will be a central venue for many presidency events. "When guests arrive, you always sweep and tidy your home. These efforts are also underway at the Seimas for the arriving guests. Here, in the first building, one of the larger tidying efforts is the renovation of cloakrooms. People often use the cloakrooms in winter, so they will see tidy cloakrooms and the environment where events take place," Olekas added.

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas noted that most of the presidency events will be held at the "Litexpo" exhibition and congress center. "We had the NATO summit a few years ago. The main spaces where all the meetings will take place are the same; 'Litexpo' will likely be the busiest for large events, while smaller events will be held in other spaces," he said after a meeting with the Speaker of the Seimas.

Benkunskas also confirmed that street repair works in the capital are proceeding without major challenges, with key projects expected to be completed by the new year. "We are looking at the schedule to ensure that by January 1st of the new year, the main streets and routes are finished. (...) We have experience, everything is proceeding according to schedule, and there are no major problems at this time," the mayor stated.
