Lithuania Proposes Legal Definition for 'Lithuanian Studies'

Lithuanian lawmakers are moving to formally define "lituanistika", the academic and cultural study of Lithuania, within the nation's laws. A working group, led by MP Agnė Jakavičiūtė-Miliauskienė, has drafted a definition that describes lituanistika as a field of humanities encompassing scientific, educational, and cultural activities centered on the Lithuanian people, language, history, culture, literature, art, philosophy, public life, and the cultivation of Lithuanian identity.

Members of the Seimas Commission for the Promotion of Lithuanian Traditions and Heritage also agreed to add the word "heritage" to the definition, recognizing its integral role in preserving Lithuanian identity. This addition underscores the comprehensive scope intended for the field.

This is a significant step strengthening the Lithuanian state's approach to lituanistika as a strategic area of national identity. The clearly established concept will become a firm basis for science, study, culture, and heritage policy, helping to ensure more consistent funding for lituanistika research, dissemination, and preservation, and also contributing to the preservation of Lithuanian identity for future generations.

According to A. Jakavičiutė-Miliauskienė, this is a significant step beyond mere terminology. She stated that clearly establishing the concept will provide a solid foundation for science, education, culture, and heritage policies. It is expected to help ensure more consistent funding for lituanistika research and dissemination, thereby contributing to the preservation of Lithuanian identity for future generations.

The initiative addresses a long-standing gap, as the term "lituanistika" lacked a formal legal definition in Lithuanian legislation. The working group consulted with experts from the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language, and the Terminology Commission of the Seimas Chancellery to develop a definition that is scientifically sound and reflects national interests. The group will continue its work to specify goals for prioritizing lituanistika.
