Lithuania Registers Fewer Births This Year, Gender Ratio Shifts

Lithuania has seen a notable decrease in the number of registered births during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023. Civil registry offices have recorded approximately 10,600 births so far in 2024, down from 12,600 births by mid-2023.

Interestingly, the gender distribution of newborns has shifted. This year, more boys were registered than girls, with 4,200 boys and slightly over 4,000 girls. This contrasts with the first half of last year, when 6,300 girls and 6,200 boys were registered.

The Vilnius city municipality's Civil Registry Department recorded the highest number of births, with 2,200 newborns. Kaunas city municipality followed with 896 births, and Klaipėda city municipality registered 487 births. Parents are required to declare a child's birth within three months of the date of birth.
