Lithuania's Electricity Price Drops 25% Amidst Wind Power Surge

Electricity prices in Lithuania saw a significant 25% drop last week, settling at an average of 75 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), according to Elektrum Lietuva.

This decrease was largely attributed to a surge in wind power generation, which served as the main factor reducing wholesale electricity costs throughout the Nord Pool region. However, Lithuania's average weekly price remained higher than Estonia's, which stood at 48.69 euros per MWh. Elektrum Lietuva cited limitations in cross-border connection capacities and the reservation of some transmission power for system balancing as reasons for this disparity.

In contrast to the wind power surge, solar power generation in the Baltic states decreased by 36% over the week. Wind power generation remained consistent with the previous week. Overall electricity demand in the three Baltic countries slightly decreased by 1% to 457 gigawatt-hours (GWh). Lithuania consumed 218 GWh, a 2% reduction from the prior week, while Latvia's consumption held steady at 124 GWh and Estonia's increased by 1% to 115 GWh.

Electricity production in the Baltic states fell by 21% to 296 GWh. Lithuania generated 72% of its consumed electricity, Latvia produced 64%, and Estonia generated 53%. Collectively, the Baltic region produced 65% of the electricity consumed within the region during the past week.
