Lithuanian Conservatives Propose Solutions to Demographic Crisis

Lithuania's conservative Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) has put forward a comprehensive proposal aimed at tackling the nation's severe demographic crisis. Laurynas Kasčiūnas, the party's chairman, described the situation as "dramatic" and "black," emphasizing the urgent need for action.

The demographic figures we have are dramatic – it is truly black.

Kasčiūnas explained that for demographic balance, Lithuania statistically requires 2.1 children per woman, but the current rate hovers between 0.99 and 1 child. He warned that the country is in a "demographic winter, crisis, or pit," stressing that any nation concerned about its future must address this issue alongside defense and security.

The TS-LKD's initiative includes concrete measures such as assisting young families struggling to afford their first homes. Kasčiūnas noted that while young professionals may be able to afford loan repayments, they often lack the initial down payment. The party also questions the effectiveness of current maternity benefit policies, suggesting resources might be better allocated to increasing benefits to 100% of previous earnings rather than capping them.

Kasčiūnas urged Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius to take leadership in forging a national consensus on demographic improvement. He stated that the TS-LKD has conducted research and public surveys to identify effective measures, emphasizing the need for data-driven analysis and a unified national approach to implement solutions that will shape Lithuania's society for decades to come.
