Lithuanian Populist Lawmaker Fined for Antisemitic Remarks and Holocaust Minimization

Lithuanian populist lawmaker Remigijus Zemaitatis has been ordered to pay a fine of 10,000 euros for making antisemitic statements and trivializing the Holocaust. The Court of Appeals partially granted a prosecutor's appeal, imposing the penalty for "publicly mocking and despising and inciting hatred against a group of people and individuals because of their Jewish ethnicity and for crudely relativizing the Holocaust committed by Nazi Germany in Lithuania, in an insulting and offensive manner."

The prosecutor had initially sought a much higher fine of 52,000 euros, appealing a previous ruling that had fined Zemaitatis only 5,000 euros. The court's decision highlighted the "continuity and systematic nature" of Zemaitatis's declarations, which were made on at least seven occasions. The court also emphasized the "aggressiveness of the rhetoric employed, the deliberate distortion of historical facts, his exceptional status as a politician at the state level, and the direct damage caused by these actions to Lithuania's international prestige and the state's security interests."

Zemaitatis leads the populist Dawn of Nemunas party, which takes its name from a Lithuanian river. The party, holding 20 out of 141 seats in the Lithuanian Parliament, joined the governing coalition after the October 2024 legislative elections. However, the party's inclusion in the tripartite government, led by the Social Democrat Gintautas Paluckas, was controversial from the outset.

The Dawn of Nemunas party remained in the government even after Paluckas resigned due to a scandal involving his private business dealings and was replaced by Inga Ruginiene. The party was ultimately expelled from the government in June of this year following escalating conflicts over national defense plans and other disputes.
