Paraguay Officer Survives Deadly Ambush by Feigning Death

Canindeyú, Paraguay – A sub-officer, Víctor Gavilán, survived a deadly ambush on a police post in Naranjito, Canindeyú, by pretending to be dead after being shot. He was transferred to the Rigoberto Caballero Police Hospital in Asunción for evaluation.

Doctor Luz Céspedes, director of the hospital, reported that Gavilán sustained a gunshot wound to the armpit. The bullet reportedly entered and exited without causing severe damage, but doctors are conducting thorough studies to rule out serious complications. Gavilán is currently in the emergency room, in stable condition, and preliminary assessments suggest no life-threatening injuries.

But he arrived in good general condition, stable, compensated and, apparently, without injuries that pose a risk.

According to prosecutor Óscar Paredes, Gavilán survived by remaining motionless after being shot, allowing him to escape into nearby brush. He was initially taken to the Curuguaty Hospital before being moved to Asunción. The attack, which involved approximately 30 assailants, resulted in the deaths of sub-officers Atilio Martínez and Herminio Ojeda, and civilian Yosimar Píris, who was the secretary for the police post.

His clinical evaluation indicates that he is in good condition, but awaiting results.

Preliminary reports indicate the officers were conducting roadside checks when they were ambushed. The attackers subsequently burned vehicles and the police post. Another officer survived by hiding in a wooded area after hearing the gunfire. The investigation is focusing on organized crime elements, with authorities noting a contrast in arms seizures compared to Brazil.
