Lithuanian Prosecutors Seek Return of 4,800 Euros from Politician in Fuel Expense Case

Prosecutors in Lithuania are pursuing legal action to reclaim 4,800 euros from politician Birutė Vėsaitė, citing irregularities in her claims for fuel expenses as a municipal council member. An examination of documents revealed that Vėsaitė had been compensated 5,221 euros for fuel, which she used to purchase 3,179 liters of gasoline.

The investigation highlighted that a significant portion, 76%, of these fuel purchases, totaling 2,627 liters and costing 4,335 euros, occurred outside the boundaries of the Lazdijai district municipality. During the COVID-19 quarantine period, Vėsaitė was compensated 74 euros for fuel costs.

This case is part of a wider effort by prosecutors across Lithuania to ensure the lawful use of municipal funds. As of July 31, prosecutors had filed 217 civil claims in district courts, seeking the return of over 2.3 million euros in total. The authorities noted that council members had voluntarily returned more than 2.1 million euros to municipal budgets by the same date.

Court proceedings for similar cases have generally resulted in favorable judgments for the prosecution, with sums close to the claimed amounts being awarded or cases being settled through amicable agreements. The ongoing scrutiny aims to hold council members accountable for their use of public funds.
