Lithuanian Social Democrats to Consider Coalition Scenarios

Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), is preparing to present three distinct scenarios regarding the party's future within the ruling coalition. He emphasized his intention to foster a genuine discussion rather than pre-emptively framing the party's position. "I can say that there are proposals. My prepared direction is clear, but let's wait for the party discussion and then on Saturday we will see," Sinkevičius told reporters in Seimas.

Sinkevičius stated that he would present proposals to his party colleagues on Saturday, acknowledging various opinions from different political actors. His role as party leader, he explained, is to offer suggestions, not merely to evaluate the current situation. This comes amid heightened tensions within the coalition, notably after a portion of the ruling partners in Seimas did not back the establishment of the Kapčiamiestis military training ground. This event has fueled internal debate within the LSDP about their continued participation in the coalition.

While Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, also an LSDP member, had previously suggested the coalition's composition would remain unchanged, Sinkevičius's upcoming presentation indicates a potential shift or re-evaluation. Some LSDP members have openly criticized the current coalition with the "Dawn of Nemunas" faction, and President Gitanas Nausėda has also voiced increasing criticism of the social democrats' work with this partner.

Further complicating the coalition dynamics were recent searches conducted by the Financial Crimes Investigation Service (FKTK) at the offices and residences of "Dawn of Nemunas" party leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis and his deputy. President Nausėda commented that the service's work would help cleanse the political environment. LSDP deputy leader Robertas Duchnevičius noted that these searches could negatively impact the "Dawn of Nemunas" faction's position within the coalition. The current governing coalition comprises the LSDP, the "Dawn of Nemunas," and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union.
