Lithuanian U18 team starts European Championship with a loss

The Lithuanian U18 men's basketball team began their European Championship campaign with a loss, facing a tough start to the tournament.

Despite the team's overall setback, Ignas Štombergas delivered a stellar performance. The player, who is part of the Kaunas "Žalgiris" system, was the brightest star on the Lithuanian squad. In 27 minutes of play, he poured in 27 points, shooting an impressive 11-of-14 from two-point range and 1-of-2 from three-point territory. He also secured 9 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and recorded 2 steals and 2 blocks, accumulating an efficiency rating of 34.

The Lithuanian team is competing in Group C, which also includes Germany, Bulgaria, and Slovenia. Following their opening match, they are scheduled to play against Bulgaria on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. and conclude their group stage on Monday against Germany at 7:00 p.m.

This tournament is a crucial step for the young Lithuanian players, as the top five teams will qualify for the 2027 U19 FIBA World Cup. The team had recently triumphed in the Baltic Cup and participated in a prestigious tournament in Spain as part of their preparation.
