Remains of Lizeth Bunshi found in Quito river after 37-day search; femicide investigation sought

The remains of Lizeth Bunshi, who vanished on July 19, 2026, were found in Quito's Machángara River on August 25, concluding a harrowing 37-day search that caused immense anguish for her family.

Her body was discovered in the Guápulo area, approximately eight kilometers from where she was last seen. The discovery brings a tragic end to the exhaustive search efforts.

Family lawyer Freddy Ron confirmed the discovery and stated that the family's primary concern was finding Lizeth. He emphasized the family's commitment to seeking justice for her, aiming to set a precedent for her case.

Authorities have detained Cristian Gonzalo V., who is currently being processed for alleged involuntary disappearance. However, the family's legal team intends to request a reformulation of charges, pushing for the case to be investigated as a potential femicide. They allege that Cristian Gonzalo V. may have dragged Lizeth to the ravine area following an episode of violence. If found responsible, the defense seeks the maximum penalty for the crime, which is 34 years and eight months.

A reconstruction of the events is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, as part of the 62-day investigation period. Lizeth Bunshi, 28, was a professional stylist, a mother to a 9-year-old son, and cared for her disabled mother.
