Lizeth Bunshi's family demands femicide investigation after remains found

The family of Lizeth Bunshi is urging authorities to investigate her death as femicide, rejecting the classification of involuntary disappearance. Bunshi's remains were discovered on August 25, 2026, in the Machángara River in Quito, 37 days after she went missing.

Freddy Ron, the family's lawyer, stated they will insist on the femicide investigation, citing technical evidence that supports this classification. "The defense continues to insist on this, and that is why we are insisting on a request for reformulation of charges for this offense," Ron said. He believes the evidence points towards a deliberate act of violence.

Norma Bunshi, Lizeth's sister, appealed for justice and revealed that forensic details indicate the cause of death. She reiterated accusations against the sole detainee in the case, identified as Christian V. The family has announced that Lizeth's wake will be held in Conocoto, and a reconstruction of the events is scheduled for August 30.

The discovery of Bunshi's body was made around 4:00 PM in the Machángara River. Initial identification was aided by the presence of dental braces, a detail confirmed by Norma Bunshi and her lawyer. The Prosecutor's Office later confirmed through forensic odontology that the remains belonged to Lizeth Bunshi, who disappeared on July 19, 2026. The primary suspect remains in custody as the investigation proceeds.
