Lost bracken collector found by rescue dog in Jeju

A 70-year-old man lost in the mountains of Jeju, South Korea, was safely rescued thanks to the keen senses of a 119 rescue dog named Narsha. The man had gone to gather bracken, a popular spring delicacy, when he became disoriented in the Gasi-ri area of Seogwipo city.

Emergency services were alerted and immediately launched a search operation. They utilized the man's mobile phone's GPS to narrow down his location. Alongside a team of rescuers, Narsha, a highly trained 119 rescue dog, joined the effort. Within approximately one hour, Narsha successfully located the missing man, who was found to be unharmed.

This successful rescue highlights Narsha's effectiveness. Just two days prior, the same dog was credited with finding two 60-year-old women who had also gotten lost while gathering bracken in Seogwipo. The swift actions of Narsha and the rescue team in both instances underscore the importance of these specialized canine units in Jeju's mountainous terrain.

Bracken gathering is a popular activity in Jeju during the spring, but it carries inherent risks. Since March 31, there have been 75 reported incidents related to bracken gathering, including 71 cases of people getting lost and four injuries. The incidents serve as a reminder for those venturing into the hills to be prepared and aware of their surroundings.
