Lottery Winner Who Saved Officer Dies in Hit-and-Run

Anthony Canty, a 39-year-old father of two, died tragically after being struck by a car in Tiptree, Essex, on May 21. His death occurred just days after he had won a £1 million prize on the EuroMillions lottery, a windfall that followed a heroic act of saving a police officer's life.

In April 2020, Canty administered CPR to a police officer who had collapsed on a bus. His life-saving intervention was widely reported, and shortly thereafter, he and his partner, Katie Sullivan, discovered they had won the substantial lottery prize on May 5, 2020.

Canty was cycling when he was hit by a Ford KA. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition and passed away four days later. The driver of the car reportedly fled the scene. Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the incident on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He has since been released while the investigation continues.

Essex Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the accident on Maldon Road to come forward. The circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, which occurred in the morning, have cast a shadow over the remarkable turn of events that had previously brought Canty such good fortune.
