Luis Bakker is the new ambassador to the United States

Quito, Ecuador – President Daniel Noboa has officially designated Luis Gerardo Bakker Villacreses as Ecuador's new ambassador to the United States. The appointment, formalized via Executive Decree 474 issued on August 14, 2026, establishes Bakker's role as extraordinary and plenipotentiary representative of the Republic of Ecuador in Washington D.C.

The presidential decision is grounded in Ecuador's Constitution, specifically Article 147, which grants the president the authority to direct foreign policy and appoint heads of diplomatic missions. The Organic Law of the Foreign Service further governs the functions and representation of the permanent diplomatic mission.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility is tasked with executing the decree, facilitating Bakker's accreditation, and ensuring Ecuador's institutional representation in the U.S. This official appointment follows the U.S. government's issuance of the necessary diplomatic approval, conveyed to Ecuador's Foreign Ministry via a Verbal Note on August 11.

The decree takes effect upon its formal issuance and will be published in the Official Registry. Bakker's tenure aims to maintain and advance bilateral and commercial relations between Ecuador and the United States.
