Lukashenko Regime Labels Polish Weekly 'Extremist'

The regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has escalated its crackdown on independent media by labeling the Polish weekly publication "Gość Niedzielny" (Our Sunday Visitor) as "extremist."

A Belarusian court in Grodno issued the ruling, which affects both the publication's website and its social media channels. This designation effectively bans the content and prohibits its dissemination within Belarus, further limiting the space for independent journalism in the country.

The move against "Gość Niedzielny" is part of a broader pattern of repression by the Belarusian authorities against perceived opposition and critical voices, particularly those originating from neighboring Poland. The designation of media outlets as "extremist" allows the state to pursue legal action, block access, and penalize individuals associated with them.

This action underscores the ongoing efforts by the Lukashenko government to control the information landscape and silence dissent, especially following the widespread protests that occurred after the 2020 presidential election. International organizations have repeatedly condemned Belarus's severe restrictions on freedom of the press and expression.
