Lula Outshines Flávio Bolsonaro in Early Election Ads

President Lula has emerged as a more prominent figure than Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the initial broadcasts of Brazil's free electoral advertising on television. The programs, which commenced Friday, showcase candidates vying for governorships, Senate seats, and state legislative positions.

Lula's image and speeches were featured prominently in the programming of allied candidates across the Northeast, a region where he holds significant support. His presence also extended to allied candidates in southern states, traditionally seen as Bolsonaro strongholds. In contrast, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, received attention from allies in Rio de Janeiro and Paraná. However, he was notably absent from the broadcasts of even his own party's allies in Rio Grande do Sul, a state where he leads in voter intention polls.

In Minas Gerais, Brazil's second-largest electoral college, Lula was highlighted by Patrus Ananias, a candidate for governor. Ananias used excerpts of Lula's speeches, emphasizing his past work as Minister of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger. "We need President Lula at the helm of Brazil once again," Ananias stated in his campaign ad.

Meanwhile, Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign ad in Minas Gerais featured Congressman Nikolas Ferreira, whose image has also been used in public rallies. Despite Flávio Bolsonaro's name being displayed, he was neither mentioned nor shown in the ad. Cleitinho Azevedo, a leading candidate in voter intention polls, focused on his outsider image and pledged to reduce the cost of living for the people of Minas Gerais.

In Rio de Janeiro, the third-largest electoral college, Flávio Bolsonaro appeared alongside former President Bolsonaro and other allies. However, Lula was also featured in some ads, albeit framed as part of the "old politics" and shown in photos with former mayor Eduardo Paes and ex-governor Sérgio Cabral. Lula's appearance in Rio was minimal, primarily a quick photo in an ad by Congresswoman Benedita da Silva.
