Lula's campaign centers government program on national sovereignty to counter Trump

Brazil's Workers' Party (PT) has officially submitted President Lula's candidacy registration and government program to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The program, structured around 13 key areas, prominently features a commitment to "defend national sovereignty and Brazil's international protagonism." This stance is presented as a direct counterpoint to what the party describes as economic retaliations practiced by the United States.

The 84-page document outlines a vision for Brazil that includes "protecting life with more efficient and integrated public security" and valuing labor in its various forms. This focus on sovereignty and international standing marks a more assertive approach compared to Lula's 2022 presidential campaign program. While national sovereignty was a recurring theme in the previous plan, the current document frames it within a more direct confrontation with U.S. policies.

In 2022, the PT's platform primarily focused on combating hunger and inequality, revising the spending cap, reducing inflation, and addressing other economic challenges. A quote from that period stated, "More than ever, Brazil needs to regain hope in the reconstruction and transformation of a country devastated by a process of destruction that has brought back hunger, unemployment, inflation, indebtedness, and family despair; that calls into question democracy and national sovereignty."

The development of the current government program, which anticipates a potential "Lula 4" administration, was coordinated by former Petrobras president Sérgio Gabrielli. It involved contributions from key figures such as the Minister of the Chief of Staff, Miriam Belchior, the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, and the Minister of Planning, Bruno Moretti. PT Chairman Edinho Silva and BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante also participated in drafting the document.
