Lula's campaign sues rivals over debate attacks, seeks removal of social media posts

The campaign of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has formally challenged two rival candidates, Renan Santos and Ronaldo Caiado, before the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The legal actions stem from alleged attacks on Lula's honor during a recent debate, an event President Lula himself did not attend.

The campaign's primary target is Renan Santos, against whom six specific statements made during the debate are cited as offensive. These include direct accusations such as calling Lula a "thief" and making personal remarks about his relationship with his wife. Lula's legal team argues that these imputations "unequivocally attack the honor and reputation" of the president. The campaign also expressed concern over the wide reach of these statements on social media, noting that one accusation alone garnered over 900,000 views on TikTok and nearly 200,000 likes on Instagram.

In addition to demanding the removal of 20 posts from social media platforms associated with Renan Santos and his party, Missão, Lula's campaign is seeking fines of R$30,000 per post. The legal filing characterizes these posts as "calumnious, defamatory, and injurious" with a significant capacity for dissemination across various platforms.

The complaint against Ronaldo Caiado focuses on a single statement made during the same debate. Caiado alluded to the "Dark Horse" case, which has caused political difficulties for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, and attempted to link it to accusations against one of Lula's sons. Caiado stated, "You have the characteristics of two candidates: the Dark Horse, you know this one. And Lula has the Dark Lobby." This reference connects Lula's son, Fábio Luís, to alleged lobbying activities involving a pharmaceutical lobbyist seeking to sell cannabidiol-based medications to the Ministry of Health. The campaign also highlighted a doctored image associating Lula with "Dark Lobby" activities.
