Lunes del Cerro 2026 Concludes in Oaxaca With a Multicolor Festival; 56 Delegations and 16 Indigenous Peoples Close Guelaguetza

Oaxaca's Guelaguetza festival reached its climax with the final Lunes del Cerro (Mondays of the Hill) celebration for 2026, a spectacular display of indigenous culture that captivated over 40,000 spectators. The event featured 16 original towns and 56 delegations, each presenting the unique traditions and artistry of their communities.

Governor Salomón Jara Cruz attended the festivities, alongside other dignitaries. The air vibrated with the sounds of Valles Centrales' chirimías, accompanying delegations from Loma Bonita and Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo. Colorful traditional attire, such as the Jarabe Ejuteco, was showcased, alongside regional products like chocolate, fruit, coffee, and handicrafts.

Memorable moments included the return of San Juan Bautista Cuicatlán to the Rotonda de la Azucena after nearly four decades, presenting the 'Tortolita Cantadora.' Other highlights included Asunción Nochixtlán's cultural diversity with 'Sones y Jarabes,' and Teotitlán del Valle's powerful 'Danza de la Pluma,' depicting historical conflicts. Juchitán de Zaragoza and San Francisco Sola also presented their unique traditions.

The festival continued with Asunción Ixtaltepec's procession honoring the Santa Cruz and Cerro Blanco Passion, and San Pedro Pochutla's vibrant 'Magia, Alegría y Tradición.' The 'Flor de Piña' from San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, with its striking colors and synchronized movements, earned a standing ovation. The event concluded with the 'Chinas Oaxaqueñas de Genoveva Medina,' who illuminated the night with lanterns and vibrant displays, accompanied by the 'Jarabe del Valle.'

Fireworks lit up the sky over Oaxaca City, marking a dazzling end to a celebration that profoundly touched the hearts of attendees, reinforcing the Guelaguetza's status as a premier cultural event in Latin America.
