Machu Picchu risks losing 'Wonder of the World' title amid tourism and management issues

Machu Picchu could lose its status as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, according to the international foundation New7Wonders, which has expressed concern over the lack of priority given to the iconic Incan citadel amidst a series of challenges.

The foundation previously issued a warning in September last year, highlighting that Machu Picchu, designated a Wonder of the World in 2007, has faced "aggravated challenges" in recent years. These include high tourism pressure without sustainable management, increasing prices for services and goods, risks to historical heritage, alleged irregular practices in ticket sales, difficulties in ground transportation, and limitations in management and conservation policies. Social conflicts and a lack of coordination between institutions and tourism companies, along with repeated visitor complaints, also contribute to the problem.

New7Wonders warned that these factors could damage Peru's image and "compromise the credibility of Machu Picchu as one of our New 7 Wonders of the World." The foundation emphasized that the designation implies a shared commitment to conservation, responsible management, and the implementation of international preservation standards. It called on the Peruvian government to work jointly with local communities and the private sector to ensure "adequate protection and management" of Machu Picchu and to preserve the "wonder effect" that positively impacts Peru's socio-economy, culture, and global standing.

In a recent statement directed at the Peruvian population and presidential candidates, New7Wonder reiterated its interest in protecting Machu Picchu's credibility. The foundation stressed that since its last warning, the situation has not significantly improved, making urgent action vital. They urged Peruvian authorities and stakeholders to "redouble the necessary efforts to guarantee the integral management of Machu Picchu," noting that proposals for a strategic transformation plan have long been provided to decision-makers.
