Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Jolts China's Sichuan Province

An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.9 shook the city of Yibin in China's Sichuan province on Monday, August 24, 2026. The tremor was registered at 8:26 a.m. local time in Changning county. The China National Seismic Network reported the epicenter's coordinates as 28.32 degrees north latitude and 105.01 degrees east longitude.

As of the latest reports, there is no information available regarding potential casualties, damage to infrastructure, or the depth of the epicenter. Yibin, situated in southern Sichuan, has been an area of notable seismic activity in recent weeks. Several tremors have been recorded, with some concentrated in Gao county, which is geographically close to Changning.

This latest earthquake follows a series of seismic events in the region. On August 7, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake also struck Gao county within Yibin. Just four days prior, on August 3, two earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 4.8 and 4.2, occurred in Gao within a span of less than twelve hours. Initial reports at that time also indicated no immediate news of casualties or significant damage.

Sichuan province, home to approximately 83 million people, is located in a seismically active zone. The area experienced a more significant earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on June 29, which resulted in at least 15 minor injuries and damage to around 900 homes, according to official figures. Historically, the province suffered a catastrophic magnitude 8 earthquake in May 2008, which caused over 90,000 deaths and disappearances.
