Magnitude 7.4 earthquake shakes Colombia's Choco province

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake jolted Colombia's Choco province on Monday morning, shaking much of the country. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported the quake occurred at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar at a depth of 82 kilometers.

Residents felt the tremors across various regions, including Antioquia, Bogotá, and Valle del Cauca. In some residential buildings, preventive evacuation protocols were activated as a result of the shaking, which lasted for several seconds. The SGC has requested public reports to better understand the intensity of the quake across different areas.

Despite the significant magnitude, initial reports indicate no victims or material damage. The SGC classified the earthquake as intermediate-depth, meaning its effects on the surface might be less severe than a shallower quake of similar magnitude.
