Maikaba targets U-20 AFCON ticket against Ivory Coast

Flying Eagles head coach Abdul Maikaba remains confident his squad will secure a ticket to the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations despite a recent loss. The Nigerian team faces a challenging semi-final clash against hosts Ivory Coast.

The Flying Eagles stumbled in their final group game, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso. This loss prevented them from securing the top spot in their group, leading to a more difficult semi-final pairing against the tournament hosts.

Despite the setback, Maikaba emphasized the team's resilience and learning capacity. "Football is about learning, responding, and showing character in difficult moments," he stated. Nigeria, a seven-time champion of the U-20 AFCON, aims to qualify for the 2027 edition to be held in Ghana. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan. Maikaba, recently appointed to the coaching role, is determined to lead the team to success.
