Major Drug Bust on Romanian Highway A1: Romanian and Ukrainian Nationals Arrested with 30kg of Drugs

Prosecutors from DIICOT have arrested two men, a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen and a 23-year-old Romanian, on charges of international and domestic trafficking of high-risk drugs. The arrests followed a substantial drug seizure on Highway A1.

According to investigators, on June 4, the two men illegally imported approximately 26 kilograms of cannabis and 4 kilograms of cocaine into Romania through the Nădlac border crossing. The illicit substances were concealed within a specially constructed compartment beneath a false floor in their vehicle.

The 57-year-old suspect was apprehended in the act while transporting the drugs along Highway A1, with the intention of distributing them for sale within Romania. DIICOT stated that the investigation revealed the defendants brought the drugs into the country concealed in the car's false floor.

Prosecutors are requesting 30 days of pre-trial detention for the suspects from the judge of rights and liberties at the Bucharest Tribunal. The operation was conducted in collaboration with officers from the Bucharest Organized Crime Combat Brigade, supported by the Highway Police Brigade and the General Directorate of Police of the Municipality of Bucharest.

From the criminal prosecution documents, it emerged that on 04.06.2026, the defendants introduced into the country, through the Nădlac border crossing point, quantities of approximately 26 kilograms of cannabis (a risk drug) and 4 kilograms of cocaine (a high-risk drug), the drugs being hidden under a false floor of a car.
