Major fire near Omiš injures 36, destroys homes and vehicles

A devastating fire that raged near the Croatian coastal towns of Omiš and Lokva Rogoznica has left 36 people injured, with seven in critical condition in intensive care.

The blaze, which broke out Thursday evening, spread rapidly, engulfing numerous houses, vehicles, and boats. Firefighters battled the flames throughout the night, and by morning, the open fire was extinguished, allowing crews to begin the arduous task of damping down the remaining hot spots. The scale of the destruction is immense, with entire homes reduced to ashes and vehicles and watercraft also consumed by the inferno.

Approximately 200 residents were evacuated from their homes as the fire advanced. Many of those displaced have been transported by bus to Split for shelter and support. The local hospital in Split reported admitting 36 individuals, underscoring the severity of the incident and the immediate impact on the community.

Fire officials described the event as one of the most severe fires in Croatia's history, highlighting the challenges faced by emergency services in containing such a widespread and intense conflagration. The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage are still under investigation.
