Malawi and Cameroon reach WAFCON final, secure World Cup berths

Malawi and Cameroon are set to clash in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final following contrasting semi-final victories on Wednesday.

Malawi showcased a strong performance, defeating Algeria 3-1. Tabitha Chawinga was instrumental, scoring twice, with her sister Temwa Chawinga adding a third goal. This victory propels Malawi into the final, where they will face Cameroon.

Cameroon's path to the final was more dramatic, as they edged out hosts Morocco 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a tense goalless draw. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina emerged as the hero for Cameroon, making crucial saves on four Moroccan penalties. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou then converted the decisive kick to secure their place in the championship match.

All four semi-finalists, Malawi, Cameroon, Morocco, and Algeria, have earned berths in the upcoming Women's World Cup in Brazil. For Malawi and Algeria, this marks their debut appearance at the prestigious global tournament. Morocco will be making their second World Cup appearance after reaching the last 16 in 2023, while Cameroon has prior experience from the 2015 and 2019 editions. The WAFCON final is scheduled for Sunday.
