Malaysia Airlines to Screen All Pilots for Drugs After Arrest

Malaysia Airlines' parent company is implementing mandatory drug screenings for all its pilots, a move that goes beyond standard industry practice. This decision follows the arrest of a 39-year-old pilot in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle over 70,000 ecstasy tablets. The pilot tested positive for meth, MDMA, and cocaine.

The airline group, Malaysia Aviation Group, announced the new policy on Friday, stating that the screening process will begin with 1,260 pilots from the national carrier and is expected to be completed by August 15. Pilots who do not undergo the tests will be grounded until they are cleared.

This enhanced measure will supplement the group's existing random testing program. Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, the group's president and chief executive, stressed the non-negotiable nature of operational safety and crew fitness. He stated that the company takes any breach of safety standards seriously and has acted swiftly to improve mandatory drug screening.

The detained pilot faces the death penalty in Indonesia if convicted. While Malaysia Aviation Group confirmed the pilot was not operating the flight from Kuala Lumpur and was off duty for two days prior, they assured that the aircraft was safely operated by two qualified pilots at all times.
