Malaysia and Thailand agree to step up fight against transnational crime

Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to build a stronger security barrier along their shared border as they confront transnational crimes including smuggling, drug trafficking and human trafficking.

The agreement was reached at the 119th Regional Border Committee meeting in Hat Yai. The meeting also strengthened arrangements for intelligence exchanges and coordinated operations between security agencies on both sides.

A spokesman for Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 said the meeting was co-chaired by Western Field Army commander Lieutenant General Datuk Khairul Azmizal Ahmad Natal and Thailand’s Fourth Army Region commander, Lieutenant General Norathip Poynok.

The two sides also identified economic, social and environmental development in border communities as a priority, alongside efforts to strengthen ties between residents. They agreed to continue developing six working groups and use the Regional Border Committee as the main channel for coordinating cooperation.
