Malaysia crafts AI policy to face future challenges

Malaysia is taking a forward-thinking approach to artificial intelligence, moving beyond traditional reactive measures to anticipate and prepare for future technological challenges. The government is actively crafting policies and building a robust AI ecosystem, recognizing that a reactive stance is no longer sufficient in the face of rapid technological advancements.

A key strategic move is the establishment of AI Malaysia, designated as the central body to drive the nation's aspiration to become an AI powerhouse by 2030. This initiative aims to proactively identify upcoming challenges and develop immediate solutions, contrasting with the old method of addressing issues only after they arise. "This approach needs to change," stated Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo. "With AI Malaysia, we want to act proactively by forecasting future challenges so that solutions are ready and can be implemented immediately when issues arise."

The proactive strategy extends to developing laws and policies as a preparedness measure. AI Malaysia will concentrate on anticipated challenges within six critical sectors, including agriculture, transportation, and health. Simultaneously, the government is prioritizing public awareness, accessibility, and acceptance of technology. "First, we need to be aware of what technology is and how it can help us. That's what drives us to use it," Gobind explained. He emphasized the need for an accessible and affordable technological ecosystem for all segments of society to ensure widespread adoption and benefit.
