Malaysia Customs Busts 3,609 Smuggling, Tax Evasion Cases Worth RM1.3 Billion

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has reported a significant success in combating smuggling and tax evasion, thwarting 3,609 cases from January to June. These operations resulted in the seizure of various goods valued at RM1.3 billion, underscoring the department's commitment to protecting national revenue.

This achievement marks a notable increase of 21.5%, or RM0.23 billion, compared to the RM1.07 billion in seizures during the corresponding period last year. JKDM Director-General Datuk Amran Ahmad highlighted that the department's efforts are yielding tangible results in curbing illicit trade activities.

Analysis of the seizures reveals that drugs were a major focus, with 220 cases involving over 2,750 kilograms and 3,399 liters, valued at RM366.58 million. Cigarettes followed, with the highest number of cases at 1,494, involving nearly 1.24 billion sticks and estimated duties and taxes of RM329.27 million. Vehicle seizures amounted to 511 cases involving 2,026 units, valued at RM191.07 million.

Other significant seizures included alcoholic beverages (417 cases, 1.79 million liters, RM81.41 million) and various other commodities such as fireworks, rice, frozen products, textiles, tires, vehicle parts, and currency (863 cases, RM295.64 million). The department stated these statistics reflect its ongoing commitment to combating smuggling and ensuring compliance with laws under its purview.

Datuk Amran Ahmad emphasized JKDM's continued focus on outcome-oriented enforcement, prioritizing high-impact cases to maximize the effectiveness of its actions. The department aims to consistently protect national revenue and ensure a fair trading environment.
