Malaysia Police to Enhance Aviation Security Role After Pilot Arrest

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is set to enhance its role within Aviation Security (AVSEC), a move expected to bolster intelligence sharing, early threat detection, and coordinated enforcement actions within the aviation sector. This initiative is part of a broader effort to fortify the nation's aviation security infrastructure.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd. Khalid Ismail stated that PDRM, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Transport, is finalizing the implementation mechanisms. These include defining the scope of duties, deployment locations, staffing requirements, responsibilities, and operational coordination. The goal is to create a more comprehensive and layered security system, encompassing improved access controls, screening procedures, security checks, risk assessments, and strategic cooperation among all relevant agencies and stakeholders.

"The implementation of stricter, integrated, and intelligence-based security controls is believed to enhance preventive capabilities, reduce risks, and close any loopholes that could be exploited by irresponsible parties," Ismail said in a statement. He assured that aviation security and the safety of the country's entry and exit points remain a top priority, and any attempts to use the aviation industry for criminal activities will be dealt with firmly.

The decision to integrate PDRM members into AVSEC comes in the wake of a recent incident where a Malaysian Airlines pilot was arrested in Indonesia on suspicion of drug smuggling. The government has directed immediate improvements to national aviation security controls. The Unity Government spokesperson, Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, confirmed that the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, made this decision. The Ministry of Home Affairs and PDRM have been tasked with examining potential areas of misuse and any existing system loopholes.
