Malaysia's Sports Minister urges thorough probe into student's death after forced sports activity

Malaysia's Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, has strongly urged a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of an 11-year-old student, Nur Qaira Alisha Ahmad ‘Ilwan. The young girl allegedly died from heart disease after being compelled by a teacher to participate in sports activities. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) expressed its condolences to the family.

Dr. Mohammed Taufiq, who is also the Member of Parliament for Sungai Petani, confirmed that education authorities are already investigating the complaint filed by the deceased's family. The incident reportedly took place on April 14 at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Pak Kiau. "This matter needs to be investigated thoroughly, comprehensively, transparently, and with integrity," the minister stated, emphasizing that no aspect should be overlooked and all relevant parties must be given a chance to provide their statements.

The minister stressed that the family deserves a factual and complete explanation of the events. "If the investigation finds any negligence, violation of regulations, or misconduct, appropriate action must be taken without compromise, in line with current laws and regulations," he added. He underscored the non-negotiable importance of student safety and well-being, stating that "we cannot take lightly or compromise on any weaknesses identified."

While urging for a fair and professional investigation process, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq requested that conclusions not be drawn until all facts are gathered and examined. He asked the public to provide space and support to the grieving family during this extremely difficult time, hoping they find strength, patience, and fortitude. The case gained attention after the father shared on social media that his daughter, who had a heart condition, was instructed to join a running event for sports house selection, despite providing a medical certificate confirming her illness.
