Malaysia, Thailand Finalize Shrimp Import Talks

Malaysia is nearing a resolution on discussions concerning shrimp imports from Thailand, with an agreement anticipated by the middle of this month. The final stages of these talks are currently underway, according to Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

This development follows Malaysia's decision in May to tighten import controls on Thai fishery products. The country implemented stricter requirements for Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for sea bass and imposed a temporary ban on five species of shrimp, effective June 1. This move prompted Thailand to signal its readiness to escalate the issue to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ASEAN forums if bilateral negotiations did not yield a satisfactory outcome.

The discussions are now in the final stages. And the resolution will be completed, God willing, by the middle of this month.

Both Malaysia and Thailand have been conducting virtual inspections to address trade issues concerning shrimp and sea bass. The Director-General of Fisheries, Datuk Adnan Hussain, stated that these inspections cover farms, laboratories, hatcheries, and border entry points in both countries. While inspections for shrimp farming areas are complete, the focus has now shifted to sea bass farms.
